Labrador Retrievers - Puppies - History

Labrador Retrievers were developed in England in the 1800s. Many kennels had their own idea of the perfect gundog they were developing. Consequently, there are a number of retriever breeds today. Fishermen needed a compact dog with a water repellent coat that would get in and out of the boat. They bred for a strong retrieving instinct in order to help retrieve fish and swimming lines. The dogs had to possess great stamina to be able to work long hours.

In the 20th century, retrievers appeared in the British Kennel Club's events. The Kennel Club of Great Britain recognized the Labrador Retriever as a separate breed in 1903. Labrador Retrievers rank among the most popular dog breeds in the world.
